About Us
The concept of this ladies-only
charity skeet weekend came from the 4 ladies in Florida who years ago
had created the Florida Ladies Skeet Association: Winnie Tucker, Carolyn
Lause, Barbara Bozard and Mary Beverly. They began their Ladies Charity
shoot back in the early '90's, holding it in March each year, rotating
it between several clubs in Florida [St. Augustine, Jacksonville,
Palatka]. Each year, they selected a local women's charity group in the
host town to be the beneficiary of the shoot proceeds. They worked long
and hard on their shoot format, securing donations and sponsors for a
weekend raffle that was to become the heart of their fund-raising
efforts. Another important concept that they incorporated from the
beginning was to open the weekend fun and experience to
all
ladies who were interested in shotgun shooting, even if they
weren't experienced registered competitors. Mary Beverly spent a day
with beginner shooters presenting her SHOTGUN FUN program, and guest
instructor Buck Buchannan donated his time hosting a Novice program that
soon fondly became known as " Buck's Girls" !!
Their first year, they
only had about 6 ladies, but they weren't easily discouraged !!
They kept at it -
passing the word, sending out more programs, inviting ladies from all
over to attend, and encouraging attendees to return and bring a friend
the next year. Many of the ladies who attended brought the men in their
lives who pitched in during the weekend as referees, trap loaders,
bartenders, cooks, and general " go-fers" to show their support for what
the ladies were doing. Eventually, they even added to the program a
special men's .410 event ( all proceeds to charity, of course) as a side
event to keep the guys happy during the weekend.
By the time they hosted
their 10th
shoot in March, 2002 at the St. Augustine Gun
Club, they had
60 ladies
participate in the weekend of ladies shooting!! At that point, tiring
of the extensive effort which lasts year-round, they made the decision
to stop the shoot and rest on their laurels, very satisfied with their
results that had promoted ladies skeet, as well as spearheading the
donation of many thousands of dollars to Florida ladies' charities over
the 10 year period.
